The Lanark Landowners Association is that association of concern citizens that stand up for each other and their communities. This is your opportunity to participate in the Mississippi-Rideau Source Protection Committee. The Lanark Landowners Association has learned that Janet Stavinga has been appointed chair of the Mississippi-Rideau Source Water Protection Committee [SPC]. The Lanark Landowners Association was instrumental in successfully electing Merle Bowes and Terry Hale to the SPC to represent agricultural. It is time to fill the other seats on the local SPC. Applications will be received until October 8th.
The Ministry of the Environment has designated that the 15 member Source Water Protection Committee be made up of three equal groups with five seats each. [1] municipalities, [2] business sector, [3] other interests [ie. community groups, cottage owners etc.] Municipalities are in the process of selecting their five Representatives. The business sector has three of the five positions in there designation available as two positions in business are designated to agriculture. In the other interests - designation are intended for the environmental groups, non-government organizations, lake associations and rural landowners.
The nominations are now being accepted for the eight positions available three from business and five from the other designations, all nominees should have an interest in protecting our water supplies and balancing the clean water legislation with a common sense approach. The Lanark Landowners Association supports the need for clean water but, also realize the clean water act will effect property ownership. Nominees should be aware that there recommendations to the SPC could have severe consequences for the very people were trying to protect. The well being of people should always be your number one concern.
Applications are available on the Source Water Protection website at www.mrsourcewater.ca These are a five year part time position commitment. There is a small per diem as well as your expenses for mileage and meals will be paid while working on Source Protection business. Applications are being accepted until October 8, 2007.
